  • Historic Building Design Guidelines Kickoff Meeting

The Naperville City Council recently adopted the Unified Recommendations prepared by the East Central Homeowner Organization (ECHO), North Central College, Naperville Heritage Society and city staff to change the process and standards for Certificate of Appropriateness review for increased property owner satisfaction. One of the key elements of the Unified Recommendations is to develop comprehensive Historic Building Design Guidelines to serve primarily as an educational document that encourages appropriate maintenance and renovations consistent with the historic architectural style, character, and scale of the existing historic structures and neighborhoods.

The City of Naperville will kick-off the Naperville Historic Building Design Guidelines project at a public meeting on Monday, October 19, 2009, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in Meeting Rooms B and C of the Naperville Municipal Center at 400 S. Eagle Street. During the meeting, city staff will provide information about the purpose and scope of the Design Guidelines document, as well as seek preliminary input regarding the content and format of the document.

Further information about the meeting will be posted to the city's Web site at www.naperville.il.us/preservation.aspx as it becomes available.

  • NCC Master Land Use Plan Meeting

    Dear North Central College neighbor:

The City of Naperville and the College have agreed that every 10 years North Central College will update its Master Land Use Plan for incorporation into the City's Master Land Use Plan. Our last plan covered the period from 20002010 and with 2010 rapidly approaching, the College has begun the process of updating the plan which will be presented to the City in late fall or early winter for their consideration.

On May 28 and again on August 31, we hosted information meetings for our neighbors to collect their feedback as we review and renew our Master Land Use Plan. We will be hosting a third information meeting for our neighbors on September 29, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in Banquet Hall of White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Avenue.

A presentation is available for viewing on the College website at

    http://www.northcentralcollege.edu/x49629.xml

where you may review our current plan as well as potential sites on our campus that may be earmarked for future development.

We welcome your input as we move through this process and hope you are able to join us on September 29. If you have any questions about the Master Land Use Plan prior to our meeting, please contact me at (630) 637-5678 or via email at phloscheider@noctrl.edu.

  • NCC Outdoor Notification System

    Dear neighbor,

The incidents that occurred at Northern Illinois University and Virginia Tech in the past couple years have created a heightened sense of security on college campuses today. The safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors is paramount at North Central College. We also recognize that we are surrounded by neighbors as well as three elementary schools and what happens on our campus can directly affect others only a few yards away. It has been our experience that the Naperville severe weather warning sirens cannot always be heard when the wind is blowing in certain directions.

More than a year and a half ago, a team of College administrators and staff set out to investigate warning notification systems for our campus and the immediate surrounding area. After much research and investigation of systems at other colleges and universities, the team recommended the purchase of an outdoor alert warning system, and installation has been approved. The approval process included review by the City of Naperville.

The College's outdoor alert warning system will consist of two clusters of speakers on the roof of Carnegie Hall, 10 N. Brainard St., and five clusters positioned on the roof of Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 455 S. Brainard St. It is unlikely that anyone will ever actually see the speakers as we believe we have hidden them wellespecially on top of Carnegie. This system will allow for both pre-scripted messages and live voice bulletins in the event of a significant emergency on or around our campus, such as severe weather or fire. Once the system is in place and fully functional, it is anticipated that the system will be tested monthly following the City of Naperville's test of its outdoor alert sirens (first Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.), hopefully causing a minimum of inconvenience to anyone.

Installation of the system began on Monday, September 21, 2009. We will provide additional information and updates once the system is installed and fully functional.

If you have any questions or comments about the College's outdoor alert warning system, please contact Donald Koletsos, Assistant to the Director of Business Operations and Risk Management Coordinator, by phone at (630) 637-5656 or by email at dekoletsos@noctrl.edu.

    Ted Slowik
